Synchronous Counters: Small Scale Integration (SSI)
Compared to Asynchronous counters, Synchronous counters are much faster since they do not suffer through the ripples that Asynchronous counters do. Also the clocks in each flip-flop are connected to an external clock. The bad part of these counters is that they require more logic than Asynchronous counters.
A synchronous counter
Instead of the amount of states, these counters use bits which function just like states in the fact that the formula for both are the same. Also like Asynchronous circuits, there are positive and negative edge trigger wiring for the counter and an Up and Down counter can be created.
